L. Patt in Amsterdam on the Trail of W.G. Sebald
The cold, dreary day offered a perfect prelude to the viewing of Rembrandt’s “Anatomy Lesson” in the Mauritshuis. Sebald’s warning about the painting acted more as a catalyst and less as a palliative to our own dis-ease. After a morning in front of Dr. Tulp’s lesson, we left the museum and wandered the narrow streets of the Hague in silence.
