Institute in a Box

A miniature version of the Institute of Cultural Inquiry exists in a traveling box. Created in the days of the Institute’s diaspora, the box encapsulates the work of the Associates in a compact form. Included in its many slots are samples of the AIDS Bottle Project, the AIDS Chronicles, the Ephemera Kabinett, and matchbox projects from ICI Press publications. Instructions for the viewer are ‘written’ inside the lid – an eyeball surrounded by teeth of the ICI Associates. In the center of the box is a platform for viewing pairs of data through stereo-glasses. Each combination reveals a possibility for past interpretations, a trajectory for future investigations.

View samples of the Associate Matchboxes in the slide show below. Inside each, a souvenir belies each Associate’s work or ideas at a particular moment in time.
